Happy New Year
-
We're back with a lot of irons in the fire once again, and Macworld is just around the corner. If you are going to Macworld, or are in the area that week consider joining us. JAMF will be invading San Francisco that week and we have a variety of things going on. First and foremost, it's time once again for our National User Group. Over the years this has grown and grown and remains one of our favorite things to host. We will be back at the Hotel Nikko with views of the city. If you are close, you simply must join us on Tuesday, February 9th. Who knows you might just get a sneak peak at something new...
There are plenty of other things happening at Macworld including our spot on the floor of the expo. Be sure to stop by booth 854. This year we have couches. Yes...couches, so stop by and take a load off your feet. We'll have demos and a bunch of JAMFs there as well. If you are in the area, and would like to attend the Expo, we have 100 attendee passes to give away. Contact Muffy to get the info you'll need to register. Passes will be distributed on a first come first serve basis, act soon before they are all gone!
If you can't catch us there, there are plenty of opportunities to meet up. We have 12 additional user groups planned across the country this year so mark your calendars! We're kicking this off in London this week, Boston in February, and at our Minneapolis office in March. See you there.
Lastly, we'd like to share a story about one of our customers. LinkedIn is featured in this case study on Apple.com and have a good thing going on. Be sure to check it out.

ENERGY STAR® is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy to promote energy efficient products and practices and recently, JAMF Software became an ENERGY STAR® Partner! This means that the Casper Suite can be used by organizations to help improve their energy performance which not only helps organizations save money but the environment as well.
There are two main ways that organizations can use the Casper Suite to make their power consumption more efficient. They are the PM Builder in the Resource Kit and the use of certain Managed Preferences in the JSS.
PM Builder
The PM Script Builder was developed to assist in building a script that sets power management settings that are supported by the pmset command line tool. Some major benefits of using the PM Script Builder are:
- Manage display and computer sleep schedules
- Manage computer startup/shutdown schedules
- Control specific power management setting options such as dynamic processor scheduling and defining whether a machine should automatically restart after a power failure.
Managed Preferences
Most of the applications written for Mac OS X store their preferences using property list files, or Òplists.Ó Each plist file represents a domain containing multiple keys and values. Managed Preferences allow you to specify the value for each key in a domain. Managed preferences can be used to all implement all of the aspects of the PM Builder as well as:
- Disable Bluetooth and Airport
- Display the screen saver only on the main screen for a system will multiple displays
To learn more about the PM Builder the Resource Kit can be downloaded and for more information about Managed preferences please reference pages 301 to 309 of the Casper Suite 7.1 Documentation

Casper Suite Demo
Many of our regular JAMF Nation readers are not yet users and are keen to learn about our solutions, or to discover how to best support Macs in their organization. While we have a number of resources online such as our PDF Library, Media Library, Knowledge Base, and Mailing List, we know that nothing beats a live demo. However, making time for a full overview can be difficult. We understand the challenge of coordinating all the individuals for a first glimpse of a product so we've scheduled a weekly live demonstration every Monday at 2:00 pm CST (GMT -6:00).
To register for any of these events visit our Events calendar and select the date you'd like to participate and register. Thanks for your interest and we look forward to the opportunity to share our solutions with you.
