JAMF Nation - supporting those who support others

Issue - 28

December 2009

  • Farewell 2009...

  • While we are in the midst of a busy holiday season, we wanted to take a brief moment to thank everyone who has helped make this a successful year for JAMF Software. While we cannot list everyone by name, you know who you are. You are customers, prospects, teammates, suppliers, partners, family and friends. You have welcomed us into your offices, server rooms and favorite haunts. We strive to provide the best client management platform for your Macs. Your feedback and support challenges and inspires us to continue working toward that goal. We look forward to serving you in the coming years.

In 2010, we will offer more CCAs, User Groups, Webcasts, Case Studies, Technical Papers and events than ever before. We hope you become involved in our community. It's an integral part of what we do and we are fortunate to have a user base that shares their best practices and successes with our platform.

Lastly, we have a small treat to share with you all. If you're tired of your drab, standard, old desktop pattern our creative elf has been busy working on a new look for your desktop. Intrigued? Indeed...check it out. It's not food, but we figure you'll have plenty of that through the end of the year.

  • Network Segments

Regardless of environment size, sometimes the most logical way to group computers is by a range of IP addresses. The JSS allows you to do this by using objects called Network Segments which can be organized by Class B subnets, Class C subnets, or any IP range therein.

Once created, Network Segments can be utilized to do the following:

    • Automatically set the closest Distribution Point, NetBoot server, and/or Software Update server for computers
    • Automatically switch the Department and/or Building for computers
    • Limit the scope for Policies to ensure they do not run when computers are outside of the corporate network
    • Limit the scope for PreStages to ensure Casper Imaging only images computers in a specific IP range

For example, if you have a policy that is set to deploy a large software package or update you may not want that deployment to occur over your wireless network. To prevent this, you would create two network segments - one for you wired IP range and one for your wireless. Then simply scope your policy to only apply to computers when they plug into the wired network. For more information on Network Segments check out pages 116-118 of the Casper Suite documentation

  • Casper Suite Demo

  • Many of our regular JAMF Nation readers are not yet users and are keen to learn about our solutions, or to discover how to best support Macs in their organization. While we have a number of resources online such as our PDF Library, Media Library, Knowledge Base, and Mailing List, we know that nothing beats a live demo. However, making time for a full overview can be difficult. We understand the challenge of coordinating all the individuals for a first glimpse of a product so we've scheduled a weekly live demonstration every Monday at 2pm CST (-6 GMT).

  • To register for any of these events visit our Events calendar and select the date you'd like to participate and register. Thanks for your interest and we look forward to the opportunity to share our solutions with you.

  • Support Your Community

  • Join our Support Mailing List! The lists often contain discussions regarding problems encountered by other Casper administrators and their resolutions. This free service is available to customers and non-customers via subscription and includes both the Casper Suite and Composer mailing lists.
